July 10, 2025: Tourism Minister Shambhuraj Desai informed the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly that a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will soon be held to accelerate stalled slum redevelopment projects in Mumbai.
Responding to a query by Tamil Selvan regarding the delayed Sion Koliwada slum redevelopment project, Desai acknowledged the issue and added that several other members, including Anant Nar and Murji Patel, raised similar concerns about redevelopment delays in other parts of the city.
Desai revealed that 517 slum redevelopment projects under the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) in the Brihanmumbai region are currently stalled for various reasons. He said, “The government and the concerned authorities have taken a slew of measures to speed up these projects.”
Under the ‘Abhay Yojana’, new developers have been appointed in 23 stalled projects, benefiting more than 25,000 slum dwellers. To further strengthen efforts, the SRA has partnered with seven government bodies—CIDCO, MHADA, MIDC, BMC, MMRDA, MSRDC, and MAHAPREIT—to boost project implementation.
Meanwhile, in the Legislative Council, Minister for Other Backward Classes Welfare Atul Save emphasized the government’s commitment to OBC welfare, announcing a supplementary budget request of ₹203 crore for the effective rollout of the ‘Mahajyoti’ schemes.
He stated that ₹174 crore has been approved for a project in Nashik and ₹29 crore for Nagpur. “The work is ongoing in Nashik, and the Nagpur project will be inaugurated soon,” Save said. In 2022-23, 20,000 beneficiaries were covered under a ₹200 crore fund.
This year, the goal is to reach 70,000 students, with 50% priority for women. Save noted that 28 students cleared the UPSC exams last year through ‘Mahajyoti’ training.
