Mumbai’s Carnac Bridge Renamed Sindoor Flyover, Opens To Public At 3 PM Today

July 10, 2025: Mumbai received a significant infrastructural upgrade on Thursday with the inauguration of a new flyover intended to ease congestion in the city’s southern corridors. The structure, now renamed the ‘Sindoor Flyover’, was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on July 10. Open for public use from 3 pm today, the bridge replaces the 154-year-old Carnac Bridge and serves as a crucial connector between the eastern and western parts of South Mumbai.

During the inauguration, CM Fadnavis expressed his pride and dedicated the flyover to the people of Mumbai. He emphasised that the name ‘Sindoor’ was chosen to honour Operation Sindoor — a counter-terror operation held dear by many Indians. The original name, derived from British-era Governor James Rivett Carnac, was replaced as part of a broader movement to shed colonial legacies.

“The dilapidated Carnac Bridge has been replaced with the new Sindoor Flyover, which we are inaugurating today. Carnac was known as a tyrannical governor. Operation Sindoor remains etched in the hearts of Indians, which is why we have chosen this name. I thank the BMC for completing the project in record time,” said Fadnavis.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) undertook the project after Central Railway declared the bridge unsafe and dismantled it in August 2022. Demolition was completed in November the same year.

Spanning 328 metres in total — with 70 metres over railway tracks and 230 metres of approach roads — the flyover links P D’Mello Road with Crawford Market, Kalbadevi, and Mohammad Ali Road. It stands just a short distance from Masjid Railway Station, near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

Commemorating the bravery shown in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, the Sindoor Flyover symbolises national resilience and is expected to significantly improve east-west traffic flow in South Mumbai.
