July 10, 2025: In a significant development for commuters along Thane’s busy Ghodbunder Road, Phase 1 of the Kasarvadavli flyover was opened to traffic on Tuesday, offering much-needed respite from daily congestion.
Ghodbunder Road, a crucial thoroughfare, is heavily used by office commuters and freight vehicles heading towards the Mumbai-Gujarat corridor via the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) or Vashi. This constant flow has long led to persistent traffic bottlenecks. With the new flyover now operational, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) expects improved connectivity between Thane, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Bhiwandi, Vasai, and Virar.
According to The Indian Express, the two-lane flyover, 7.5 metres in width, along with a 2×2 lane underpass, has been designed to handle a capacity of 73,333 passenger cars per day. The structure is also anticipated to enhance intermodal integration with Metro Line 4, which runs from Wadala to Gaimukh.
The opening of Phase 1 is expected to reduce travel time significantly, particularly between Waghbil and Gaimukh.
The project was inaugurated by Maharashtra’s transport minister, Pratap Sarnaik, who had been a vocal proponent of better infrastructure in the region. “Seeing this long-cherished dream materialise is immensely satisfying. This flyover will streamline travel across Thane, Borivali, Vasai, JNPT, and Gujarat. While the left lane is open to traffic, work on the right lane will commence post-monsoon,” he stated.
Ghodbunder Road, which lies entirely within Thane district, serves as a critical connector between the Eastern Express Highway at Kapurbawdi (linking with NH-3) and the Western Express Highway at Ghodbunder village, which in turn connects to NH-8 heading towards Gujarat.
