July 11, 2025: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched a focused demolition drive targeting unauthorised constructions in the Airoli area. The action followed the defiance of a legal notice served under Section 54 of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning (MRTP) Act, 1966.
Acting on directives issued by Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, and under the guidance of Additional Commissioner (2) Dr Rahul Gethe and Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Dr Kailas Gaikwad, the Encroachment Department carried out the operation on Wednesday.
The enforcement was specifically directed at House No. F-203, Sector-03, Airoli, where Vasant Sathe had begun construction work without obtaining the necessary building permissions. The local G-Division office had earlier issued a notice under the MRTP Act, urging the owner to voluntarily dismantle the illegal structure. Despite the warning, Sathe failed to comply and continued development.
Following an order passed by the Municipal Commissioner on Lokshahi Din (Democracy Day), a partial demolition was executed under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner and Airoli Ward Officer, Sunil Kathole. The drive also addressed unauthorised stalls and encroachments affecting the pedestrian zone near Diva Gaon Circle.
The demolition operation was carried out by G-Division officials, with assistance from 10 labourers, one JCB machine, two hydraulic breakers, a gas cutter, and security support from local police personnel.
Civic authorities have confirmed that such operations will continue as part of NMMC’s ongoing anti-encroachment agenda. The demolition in Airoli serves as a strong message to violators and sets a precedent for enforcing urban planning norms across Navi Mumbai.
Officials emphasised the importance of collaboration between enforcement teams, engineering staff, and police to maintain civic order and ensure regulatory compliance in rapidly growing urban zones.
