July 11, 2025: The newly inaugurated Katai-Nilje Flyover, commonly referred to as the Palava Flyover, has come under heavy public scrutiny just days after opening. Designed to ease traffic congestion between Shilphata and Kalyan, the flyover was officially opened on July 4 by Shiv Sena MLA Rajesh More from Dombivli. However, incidents and online backlash quickly followed.
On its very first day, two motorcyclists reportedly skidded on the flyover and sustained minor injuries. Within just four days, social media was awash with criticism, as users labelled the flyover a “skidding zone”, pointing out loose gravel, muddy patches, cement spills, and unevenly laid tarmac.
The 562-metre-long structure, of which approximately 450 metres is reportedly in poor condition, was constructed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) at a cost of Rs 250 crore. Contractors are now working continuously on hazardous sections in an attempt to reduce the risk of accidents.
Footage and images of the substandard road surface have gone viral, sparking widespread criticism. One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote: “The Rs 250 crore Katai-Nilje Flyover, which opened just four days ago, resembles a construction site. Even someone with cataracts could see the flaws, yet the authorities appear blind to them.”
Another user posted, “Such third-class roads… Inaugurated on July 4th , potholes by July 5th. This is the state of the Palava Flyover on Kalyan-Shil Road.”
Construction on the flyover began in December 2018, intended to resolve long-standing traffic woes in the area. Two parallel carriageways were planned—one from Shilphata (Desai Naka) to Kalyan (Katai Naka), and the other in reverse. Work was delayed due to the proposed expansion of Indian Railways’ Dedicated Freight Corridor. The flyover comprises 45 supporting pillars and spans from Desai Creek to the Katai toll naka.
