July 14, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has officially commenced groundwork on a 1.2-kilometre stretch in Goregaon as part of Phase 2 of Mumbai’s ambitious Coastal Road Project. This segment, located outside the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ), marks the beginning of on-site development for the northern extension of the coastal corridor.
Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar conducted a site inspection on Wednesday to assess the initial progress. This northern phase of the Coastal Road aims to establish a seamless link between Versova in the western suburbs and the satellite city of Bhayandar, incorporating intertidal sections, elevated roadways, and twin tunnels.
While the Goregaon portion is free from CRZ restrictions, much of the overall alignment of the project traverses mangroves, creeks, and other ecologically sensitive areas. Earlier this month, the BMC secured Stage I approval from the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) for diverting portions of mangrove forest land. The civic body will now seek permission from the High Court to proceed with work in CRZ zones, following which final Stage II approvals from MoEFCC are expected.
The ongoing work in Goregaon is part of Package B, which spans 1.66 kilometres from Bangur Nagar to Mindspace, Malad. During his site visit, Bangar issued a clear directive: no activity is to take place in CRZ-designated zones until all legal and environmental clearances are in place.
In addition to inspecting the Goregaon site, Bangar also visited several other Phase 2 locations, including Versova, Andheri, Lokhandwala Interchange, and Malad Mindspace, where he reviewed ongoing progress and interacted with officials.
The Coastal Road Project’s second phase continues to navigate complex environmental regulations and staged construction, critical to shaping Mumbai’s coastal infrastructure future.
