July 15, 2025: As Mumbai edges closer to fully operationalising Aqua Line 3, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has unveiled plans for another transformative project — Metro Line 11. The proposed 17.5-kilometre underground corridor, stretching from Anik Depot to the iconic Gateway of India, aims to enhance urban mobility across some of South Mumbai’s most densely populated and historically significant neighbourhoods.
Metro Line 11 reflects the city’s growing commitment to a sustainable, interconnected, and inclusive transport system. The project, currently awaiting approval from both the Maharashtra state and Central governments, will pass through key locations such as Nagpada and Bhendi Bazaar. Except for the Anik Depot station, the entire route will be constructed underground, minimising surface disruption and preserving the city’s complex urban character. This approach aligns with environmentally responsible development and efficient land use practices.
Approval of the line requires thorough feasibility assessments and detailed project reports, followed by funding arrangements—domestic or international. Once financing is secured, MMRCL will pursue environmental and legal clearances before initiating the tendering process for construction.
The proposed line will operate six-coach trains and will be serviced by a strategically located depot at the Anik–Pratiksha Nagar BEST bus depot, covering 16 hectares. Importantly, Metro Line 11 is designed as a key component of Mumbai’s multi-modal transport network, offering seamless connectivity to other metro lines, the Monorail, and major suburban railway stations including Byculla and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
This expansion supports Mumbai’s vision of a zero net carbon future. By offering a high-capacity, electric public transport option, Line 11 is expected to reduce dependency on private vehicles, ease traffic congestion, cut emissions, and improve air quality—enhancing the overall liveability of the city.
