July 16, 2025: In a major boost to urban mobility, Maha Mumbai Metro has significantly increased services on Metro Lines 2A and 7, scaling up daily trips to 305 in response to rising commuter demand. This strategic move follows a record single-day ridership of over 3 lakh passengers—an indicator of growing public confidence in the metro network.
The upgrade, executed by the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) under the oversight of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), involves the addition of three new trainsets. This brings the total number of operational rakes from 21 to 24, facilitating 21 additional daily services. The expansion is aimed at easing congestion during peak hours and improving overall passenger experience.
One of the most significant operational changes is the reduction in peak-hour headway—from 6 minutes 35 seconds to 5 minutes 50 seconds—resulting in shorter wait times and decongested platforms. A headway of 9 minutes 30 seconds during non-peak hours has been maintained, ensuring both frequency and energy efficiency.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reaffirmed the government’s commitment, stating, “As citizens increasingly embrace the metro as their primary mode of transport, it becomes our duty to stay ahead of their expectations.” Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde hailed the metro as a new “lifeline” for Mumbai’s daily commuters.
Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee further outlined the MMRDA’s broader goal of delivering “Mumbai in Minutes”, with the metro network envisioned as the gold standard for urban transport. The service enhancement, backed by data-driven planning and commuter flow analysis, marks a key milestone in creating a more equitable, gender-neutral, and sustainable transport ecosystem for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
