July 17, 2025: Starting tomorrow, commuters on Mumbai Metro Lines 2A and 7 can expect faster and more frequent services, as authorities introduce increased trips and reduced waiting times.
The Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL) has announced a rise in daily services from 284 to 305, according to the Free Press Journal. To facilitate this, 21 new peak-hour trips will be added and three new trainsets will be deployed. As a result, the train frequency will improve, with intervals between services reducing from 6 minutes 35 seconds to just 5 minutes 50 seconds.
This operational upgrade comes on the heels of a major ridership milestone. On Tuesday, the Metro recorded an all-time high of 3,01,127 passengers in a single day — the highest since the inception of Maha Mumbai Metro services.
In a further sign of growing commuter engagement, the Metro also saw its highest number of WhatsApp-based ticket bookings, with over 62,000 passengers opting for the digital, paperless method. The shift highlights Mumbai’s gradual move towards more sustainable and tech-enabled public transport options.
Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA and Chairman of MMMOCL, remarked, “Maha Mumbai Metro has crossed 3 lakh daily riders for the first time. This reflects Mumbai’s growing bond with the Metro. My gratitude to the people of Mumbai and our committed team for this milestone.”
Metro Lines 2A (Dahisar East to DN Nagar) and Line 7 (Dahisar East to Gundavali) are instrumental in easing traffic in the western suburbs. With air-conditioned coaches, improved punctuality, and expanding digital access, these lines are quickly becoming the preferred mode of travel for thousands of Mumbaikars.
