July 19, 2025: Mumbai’s ambitious seafront transformation project has taken a significant step forward, with the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) granting crucial coastal clearance for the next phase of the promenade. The approved segment stretches from Haji Ali to Baroda Palace, and tenders are expected to be floated soon after the project cost evaluations are finalised.
The promenade—spanning 7.5 km in length and 20 metres in width—is envisioned as a major recreational space for walkers, joggers, and cyclists. Two vital portions of the project—2.75 km from Tata Garden to Haji Ali and 2.5 km from Lovegrove Nullah to B M Thackeray Chowk—have already been completed, adhering to the revised July 15 deadline.
Six access points, including Tata Garden, Haji Ali Juice Centre, and Mahalaxmi Temple, will be opened to the public during this phase. The remaining five access points will be kept closed until the final 2.25 km stretch is completed.
In parallel, the civic body is advancing a major underground parking facility at Haji Ali. Designed as a four-storey structure with a capacity for 1,200 vehicles, the project is nearing the tendering stage. A proposed 1 km stretch of the promenade near the parking zone has been shelved due to concerns over traffic safety.
As part of a broader Rs 4 billion corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, Reliance Industries Limited is spearheading the landscaping of 53 hectares of reclaimed land. The development will comply with all environmental and zoning norms.
This coastal promenade project is set to become one of Mumbai’s most iconic public spaces, offering uninterrupted views of the Arabian Sea while enhancing urban mobility and leisure infrastructure along the city’s western coastline.
