SCLR Extension Nears Completion, Operations To Start July 2025

July 19, 2025: Mumbai’s infrastructure landscape is on the cusp of a significant transformation as the final phase of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) extension nears completion, with operations scheduled to commence in July 2025. This vital project promises a signal-free corridor seamlessly connecting the eastern and western suburbs—capped by an eye-catching 90-degree cable-stayed arm soaring above the Western Express Highway (WEH).

A spokesperson from Chandak Group remarked, “The SCLR extension ushers in a new era for Mumbai’s eastern suburbs. Chembur, in particular, is set to witness a surge in residential demand owing to its now unparalleled access to business hubs and the airport. Enhanced commute times significantly boost liveability, thereby bolstering buyer confidence.”

Led by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the SCLR extension is a flagship initiative to improve east-west mobility. While substantial sections of the corridor have been operational for years, this final link has long been awaited. Once launched, it will ease traffic across Kurla, Chembur, Chunabhatti, Kalina and BKC—providing direct access to the WEH while bypassing notorious bottlenecks like Vakola and Hans Bhugra Marg.

The flyover is expected to slash travel times, particularly during rush hours, and streamline traffic towards the airport. It will also help decongest internal roads, offering long-overdue respite to residential areas affected by through-traffic.

Beyond commuting benefits, the extension is catalysing a real estate upswing in the eastern suburbs. Chembur witnessed a 25% rise in property prices after the initial SCLR phase—driven by projects like the Eastern Freeway, Monorail and Metro. Experts anticipate a similar impact now.

As one investor noted, “With this final link complete, micro-markets like Chembur and Kalina are on the brink of major appreciation. Now is the time to invest.”
