July 21, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to initiate redevelopment of several major municipal markets in Mumbai, including Marol Fish Market, Navalkar Market, Dattaji Salvi Market, and Nirmalatai Raginwar Market. The announcement was made by BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani during a recent joint meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, along with Member of Parliament Ravindra Waikar.
The redevelopment of Marol Fish Market will be handled by the Fisheries Department, with the BMC transferring its share of the project funding. Commissioner Gagrani confirmed the civic body’s financial support, stating its commitment to addressing long-standing infrastructure issues in these markets.
The meeting, held at Deputy CM Shinde’s legislative office, focused on pending civic issues in the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency. Senior officials from departments including Urban Development, MHADA, SRA, MMRDA, and the BMC were in attendance. MP Waikar highlighted the deteriorating condition of several BMC-run markets and urged immediate redevelopment, particularly of the Marol Fish Market, citing persistent demands from local fish vendors.
Regarding Navalkar Market, Commissioner Gagrani stated that the redevelopment blueprint has already been approved and that tenders will be floated soon.
The meeting also addressed basic infrastructure needs for forest-dwelling residents. MP Waikar stressed the need to provide essential services such as water supply, roads, and toilets to these communities, which have lacked access for years. Responding to this, Deputy CM Shinde instructed the BMC to expedite the provision of these amenities.
In Aarey Colony, where 27 tribal hamlets face regular wildlife threats, Shinde directed the installation of streetlights along 45 km of internal roads to improve safety. The move aims to reduce animal attacks and enhance living conditions for the area’s tribal population.
