Massive Steel Span Installed On Mumbai Metro 4 As Project Nears 85% Completion

July 21, 2025: Mumbai’s Metro Line 4 marked a major construction milestone on Friday with the successful installation of a 325-tonne steel span at Kapurbawadi Junction on Ghodbunder Road. The 48-meter-long structure is a key element in the Wadala-Kasarvadavli corridor and represents critical progress for the project. Despite heavy rains and ongoing traffic, the operation was completed in just two nights, with more than 100 engineers and workers on-site, along with heavy-duty cranes, highlighting the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA) commitment to timely delivery and engineering precision.

The installation involved lifting the 14-meter-high steel span, made up of four large steel girders, using 700MT and 550MT cranes, supported by additional backup cranes. The process was executed with the support of over 50 trained traffic wardens, who helped maintain traffic flow on the busy Ghodbunder Road—an area constrained by existing flyovers and high vehicular movement. The success of the operation with minimal disruption reflects strong coordination and planning.

According to the MMRDA, Metro Line 4 is now 84.5% complete. The recent span marks the completion of all special steel structures between Majiwada and Kasarvadavli, helping keep Phase 1 commissioning on schedule. The 32.32-kilometer elevated corridor, with 30 stations, is expected to reduce travel time by up to 75% in certain sections and ease congestion on the Eastern Express Highway.

Once operational, Metro Line 4 will offer critical interconnectivity with the Eastern Express Roadway, Central Railway, Monorail, and other metro lines. With an estimated project cost of Rs 14,549 crore, the corridor is positioned to significantly enhance the city’s public transport infrastructure, offering improved accessibility and transforming daily commutes across Mumbai and Thane.
