Viral Video Shows Rainwater Leaking In Mumbai AC Local, Sparks Commuter Outrage

July 21, 2025: Mumbai witnessed another day of relentless rain on Monday, continuing from Sunday night, as a viral video exposed rainwater leaking through the vents of an air-conditioned local train. The clip, widely shared on social media, sparked outrage among commuters already grappling with the city’s weather-related disruptions.

Posted by a user named ‘jai ho’ on platform X (formerly Twitter), the video captured rainwater seeping into a crowded AC coach during peak morning hours. Passengers were seen wiping wet surfaces and expressing frustration. The caption read: “This is Mumbai’s AC local… All rainwater coming inside. For this we pay so much??????” The post tagged several officials, including the Railway Ministry, Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Central and Western Railway authorities.

In response, RailwaySeva, the official support handle, acknowledged the issue and stated: “For necessary action escalated to the concerned official,” tagging the Mumbai Division of Central Railway.

The incident has reignited concerns over the readiness and upkeep of Mumbai’s suburban railway infrastructure during the monsoon. AC locals, introduced to improve commuter comfort, are now facing criticism for failing to provide basic protection from heavy rains.

Meanwhile, citywide rainfall led to severe waterlogging across several areas. Roads in Marine Drive, Andheri, Kurla, and near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus were submerged, leaving many stranded. The Andheri subway was temporarily closed, while traffic moved slowly on LBS Road in Kurla, DP Road in Powai, and Saki Naka due to flooding.

Train services on the Central and Harbour lines experienced delays, and air travel was disrupted. IndiGo issued advisories urging passengers to leave early, while the airport shared updates for delayed flights. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai Suburban and a yellow alert for Thane and Palghar districts.
