BMC To Demolish 625 Huts For National Park Tunnel, Rehab Homes Ready

July 22, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is preparing to demolish approximately 625 homes in the Amar Nagar slum in Mulund, adjacent to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), to make way for the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) tunnel. The affected families will be relocated to Bhandup West, near Kanjurmarg, where six rehabilitation buildings are under construction.

The GMLR is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving east–west connectivity in Mumbai. It includes a 4.7-kilometre tunnel stretching from Film City in Goregaon to Mulund, with its eastern portal near Amar Nagar. The slum lies directly in the path of this proposed route.

A BMC official from the bridges department confirmed that project-affected persons (PAPs) would be allotted flats measuring 300 square feet each. A total of 906 units are being constructed at Runwal Forest in Bhandup, with relocation expected to be completed by December.

Of the 625 structures identified for removal, four out of seven Annexure II eligibility lists have been finalised, confirming eligibility for around 350 residents. The remaining lists are under process. The rehabilitation buildings will feature six towers of 23 storeys each.

However, residents report confusion and dissatisfaction. Kishore Jain, a long-time resident, said over 700 eviction notices had been issued, affecting some 1,707 people. “They said relocation would happen by Diwali, now it’s after the BMC elections,” he said, adding that no official confirmation of the relocation site has been given.

Concerns have also been raised over the reduction in flat size from 375 to 300 square feet. Several residents, despite decades in Amar Nagar and cleared eligibility checks, say they remain in the dark about their future homes. At least 20 people have reportedly been declared ineligible.
