Heavy Rains Disrupt Mumbai: Train Delays, Subway Flooded, Orange Alert Issued

July 23, 2025: Torrential rain continued to lash Mumbai and nearby districts on Wednesday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for several regions. The advisory, which signals the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall, has been issued for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Palghar.

In Mumbai, severe waterlogging once again brought parts of the city to a standstill. The Andheri Subway has been closed to traffic after nearly 1 to 1.5 feet of water accumulated across both lanes. Mumbai Traffic Police have urged motorists to take alternative routes via Gokhale Bridge and Thackeray Bridge.

“Due to waterlogging, both northbound and southbound lanes of Andheri Subway are shut. Please avoid the area,” the police stated on X (formerly Twitter).

The downpour has also disrupted train services, particularly on the Central and Harbour lines, leaving thousands of daily commuters either stranded or delayed. According to the m-Indicator app, Western Railway services remain largely unaffected as of now, though officials are keeping a close watch.

Ghatkopar and neighbouring areas have experienced consistent heavy rainfall since early morning, with forecasts indicating continued showers at least until 10 a.m.

The IMD has predicted widespread rainfall across Maharashtra through the remainder of the week. In addition to coastal districts, Pune, Satara, and parts of Marathwada are also under alert for heavy to very heavy rain until July 28.

Regions in Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada are expected to see intense downpours, while the rest of western India may experience light to moderate showers.

Civic authorities remain on high alert. Residents have been advised to venture out only when absolutely necessary, especially during peak rainfall hours. The recurring issues highlight the urgent need for more resilient drainage systems and improved urban infrastructure.
