Heavy Rains Expose Poor Infrastructure At Santacruz Station, Western Railway Criticised

July 23, 2025: Heavy rains in Mumbai have once again exposed the vulnerability of public infrastructure, with commuters facing water pouring down from the foot overbridge (FOB) at Santacruz Station (East). A video posted by the X (formerly Twitter) user @mumbaimatterz highlighted the situation, showing rainwater flowing from the bridge roof and directly onto passengers trying to enter the station.

Tagging railway authorities like @drmbct, @RailMinIndia, @RailwaySeva, and @WesternRly, the user wrote, “Hope your Engineers ever heard of Rain Water Gutter.. (pic 2)? If fixed, commuters need not suffer like this during #MumbaiRains.” The post criticized the absence of basic drainage systems, pointing out how such oversights continue to affect daily travellers during the monsoon.

The video quickly went viral, drawing attention to the deteriorating condition of Mumbai’s suburban infrastructure and prompting responses from railway officials. @RailwaySeva responded: “In the post shared by the user, for necessary action, escalated to the concerned official @Drmbct @RailwaySeva. We regret the experience you had. Please share your mobile no. preferably via DM to enable us to take immediate action.” They also encouraged users to raise issues via the Rail Madad platform or by dialling 139. Additionally, the DRM – Mumbai Central division of Western Railway confirmed, “Matter notified to concerned.”

Meanwhile, in a related update, IndiGo Airlines issued a travel advisory for passengers in Mumbai and Delhi due to severe waterlogging and traffic congestion caused by continuous rainfall. Travellers have been advised to leave early for the airport to avoid delays, as key access routes remain choked due to the downpour.

The incident at Santacruz station has reignited calls for robust monsoon preparedness and improved passenger safety at busy suburban stations.
