July 23, 2025: Dharavi is a 641-acre area in Mumbai that is home to over one million people. Globally recognised for its entrepreneurial spirit and featured in numerous films, Dharavi is now on the brink of a historic transformation. Leading this ambitious overhaul is Gautam Adani, India’s second-richest individual, through his company Adani Realty.
Adani Realty is spearheading a USD 11 billion redevelopment project aimed at completely reshaping Dharavi into a modern urban township. The massive plan envisions state-of-the-art housing for thousands of current residents, integrated commercial and industrial hubs, premium apartments, schools, hospitals, large green spaces, and a new transport network connecting the area to key parts of Mumbai.
More than just a real estate venture, the project is expected to be a pivotal moment for Adani Realty. Projections estimate revenue generation of up to USD 14 billion and profits reaching $3 billion, further cementing Adani Realty’s position as a major player in the country’s real estate landscape.
The company has already been expanding rapidly—acquiring stalled projects and winning major government tenders across Mumbai. It is also developing a new airport near the city and planning a luxury commercial complex along the Arabian Sea. Yet, Dharavi remains the group’s most ambitious and visible project so far.
The redevelopment promises not only physical upgrades but also social upliftment—modern homes, reliable healthcare, education, employment opportunities, and better infrastructure for Dharavi’s residents. Importantly, the plan aims to preserve Dharavi’s spirit of resilience and enterprise.
More than construction, Adani’s vision is about building a self-sustaining, inclusive ecosystem that reflects modern urban planning ideals. If successful, it could become a benchmark for sustainable and community-centric redevelopment across India, showcasing how private enterprise and public vision can come together to reimagine urban futures.
