July 28, 2025: Central Railway (CR) has informed the Bombay High Court that its Rs 800 crore Kalyan Yard remodeling project is scheduled for completion by March 2027. The Mumbai Division submitted the timeline through an official affidavit, highlighting the project as one of its most significant infrastructure upgrades to date.
The remodeling is aimed at improving the operational efficiency of Kalyan, a key junction in the Mumbai suburban network, by separating long-distance and suburban train operations. According to CR officials, this segregation will increase capacity, reduce congestion, and enable smoother train movement. Presently, simultaneous usage by local and long-distance trains often leads to delays, with trains held at outer signals due to platform unavailability.
“The creation of additional platforms will not only enhance the punctuality of suburban services but also streamline the movement of long-distance and freight trains,” said an official.
The project includes the construction of six new platforms—three of which will be island platforms, each measuring 620 meters—dedicated to long-distance routes towards Pune and Nashik. A new Goods Yard with 12 receiving and dispatch lines is also planned to facilitate seamless freight operations in all directions.
CR will also develop a new station building and circulating area between the passenger platforms and the Goods Yard, along with a Road Over Bridge parallel to the existing Patri Pul to ease vehicular traffic.
To accommodate the large passenger volume—currently averaging 4 lakh daily—a massive deck slab covering 56,700 square meters will be built to offer weather protection and crowd control. “This will also help control the crowd,” an official added.
In addition, three new 12-meter-wide Foot Over Bridges (FOBs), rainwater harvesting systems, and upgraded water carriage for coaches are included to enhance sustainability and passenger convenience.
