July 29, 2025: Mumbai’s civic chief Bhushan Gagrani on Tuesday visited Shivaji Park to inspect ongoing efforts and address residents’ concerns over persistent dust pollution caused by the red soil in the precinct. During the visit, Gagrani assured locals that a sustainable, long-term solution would be developed in consultation with experts from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B), and with active input from the community.
“We will arrive at a viable solution after consulting subject experts and maintaining regular dialogue with local residents,” Gagrani told the media during the inspection of the ground and surrounding promenade.
In response to Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) directives, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has begun experimenting with turfing the ground using American Bermuda grass—a resilient grass commonly used for sports fields. On 18 June, the civic body laid turf over two test patches covering approximately 200 sq m. This pilot initiative is being undertaken based on recommendations from IIT-B, with findings to be submitted to the MPCB as part of a feasibility report.
Gagrani acknowledged that some residents have questioned the long-term viability of grass turfing, especially given that the ground is used for a variety of activities, including public events and political rallies. “We will await IIT-B’s final conclusions before making any decisions regarding broader implementation,” he stated.
The Bombay High Court currently allows public gatherings at Shivaji Park for up to 45 days each year. Meanwhile, local residents have expressed concerns about turf maintenance, particularly regarding the availability of water for gardening and the upkeep required after large-scale events. As civic authorities weigh expert input and community feedback, the focus remains on ensuring a durable solution that balances environmental concerns with the park’s public utility.
