Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: 8 Stations To Be Ready By 2027, Says Railways

July 30, 2025: The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is set to complete the construction of eight stations on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor in Gujarat by December 2027. The 508-km corridor, India’s first bullet train project, aims to revolutionize intercity travel and place India among global leaders in high-speed rail infrastructure.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on July 23, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that the Vapi to Sabarmati stretch—covering stations at Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati—is scheduled to be completed by 2027. This segment will form the operational backbone of the project in its initial phase, significantly cutting travel time between Gujarat’s major cities.

The entire corridor will include 12 stations, with Mumbai, Thane, Virar, and Boisar located in Maharashtra. The full stretch is expected to be operational by December 2029. After earlier delays, work in the Maharashtra segment, including the crucial terminal at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC), is now progressing steadily.

A major engineering milestone was achieved this month with the first tunnel breakthrough in the 21-km-long section between BKC and Shilphata, which includes a 7-km undersea tunnel beneath Thane Creek—the first of its kind in India. Of this, 5 km is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), and 16 km using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).

Mamta Shah, MD & CEO of Urban Infra Group, said, “India’s bullet train project represents a transformative leap in the country’s transportation infrastructure… It’s a symbol of India’s vision to modernize mobility.”

The bullet train, with a top speed of 320 kmph, will cut travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to around 2 hours. It will incorporate Japanese Shinkansen technology for safety and efficiency.
