Mumbai’s Metro Makeover: New Lines And Unified App To Transform Commute By This Year

July 30, 2025: Mumbai is gearing up for a major transformation in public transport, with four new Metro lines and the introduction of the Mumbai One app expected by 2025. These developments aim to create a seamless, eco-friendly, and tech-integrated commute for the city’s residents.

Currently, Mumbai has a 12-line Metro network under development, spanning a planned 337.1 km. Of this, 58.9 km across four lines are already operational. The remaining eight lines are under construction, promising to expand connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). This infrastructure is key to reducing the city’s carbon footprint and easing reliance on private vehicles.

Among the upcoming projects, Metro Line 9—connecting Dahisar and Mira Bhayander—will improve access to the northwestern suburbs. The 10.5 km elevated corridor is expected to begin operations by December 2025. Another major route, Metro Line 2B, will span 23.64 km from DN Nagar to Mandale, improving east-west connectivity and reducing travel time across areas such as BKC, Kurla, and Chembur.

A key element of this upgrade is the Mumbai One app, designed to unify transport services across Metro, suburban rail, Monorail, and bus systems. The app will allow users to plan, book, and pay for trips, offering features like live updates, QR-code ticketing, and real-time tracking. As part of the Digital India initiative, it supports paperless travel and integrated mobility.

Sustainability is a central aspect of the Metro expansion. The energy-efficient design and green technologies aim to lower emissions and reduce road congestion. Supporting this growth, the MMRDA has also completed the Mandale Metro depot, which features India’s largest Metro training centre, equipped with advanced simulators to prepare skilled operators.

Together, the new Metro lines and Mumbai One app will redefine commuting, making it faster, greener, and more efficient.
