SC Allows Tree Authority To Decide On BMC’s Plea To Cut Trees For GMLR Project

July 30, 2025: The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the Tree Authority to consider the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) request to fell 95 trees in Film City for the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project.

A bench of Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran observed that development and environmental protection must go hand in hand while hearing BMC’s plea seeking permission to cut trees for the project’s first phase.

The GMLR is a key infrastructure initiative aimed at improving East-West connectivity in Mumbai. It proposes to link the Western Express Highway with the Eastern Express Highway, potentially cutting travel time between Goregaon and Mulund by nearly an hour.

The court’s decision marks a step forward in the project’s execution, pending the Tree Authority’s final decision on the tree-felling request.
