New Mumbai-Pune Highway To Cut Travel Time To 1.5 Hours

August 2, 2025: Pune is set for a major infrastructure boost with the launch of a new highway project linking it to Mumbai. Now under construction, the route will reduce travel time between the two cities to just one and a half hours, a significant improvement over the current journey. Part of a Rs 50,000 crore investment in road and highway projects across Pune district, the initiative aims to create a faster, more sustainable, and better-connected urban corridor that drives economic growth and improves quality of life.

Designed as a key component of a modern, eco-friendly transport network, the highway aligns to build zero-net-carbon cities by enabling smoother traffic flow. It will connect to the proposed Pune Ring Road and the Atal Tunnel, forming a high-speed link extending to Bengaluru. This will ease congestion on the existing Mumbai-Pune Expressway while facilitating efficient movement of goods and people, helping cut carbon emissions from long-haul transport.

The Rs 50,000 crore investment will also fund elevated roads and other vital infrastructure, strengthening Pune’s position as a regional hub. These developments are expected to create substantial employment in construction, logistics, and maintenance, while attracting further investment to the region.

Beyond the highway, the city is advancing other key projects, such as the Pune Metro, which integrates multiple transport modes to create a resilient urban ecosystem. With strategic links to regional roads and public transit, the highway will serve as a cornerstone of Pune’s sustainable growth strategy, building a city that is well-connected, economically vibrant, and environmentally responsible.
