August 5, 2025: The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) is developing plans for a ropeway system that would connect the Aarey Metro Station on Metro Line 3 with Goregaon’s Film City, with a possible extension to Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), according to a report by the Times of India.
The proposed ropeway aims to alleviate chronic traffic congestion in the area while providing a sustainable and efficient mode of transport for thousands of commuters and tourists alike. Officials noted that the ropeway corridor would span between 2 and 3 kilometres, depending on the final alignment, and would be capable of transporting 2,000 to 3,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
“This system is being envisioned not merely as a transit link, but as a clean, modern alternative that complements the metro network while ensuring minimal ecological disruption,” an MMRCL official was quoted as saying. The route will link directly with Mumbai Metro Line 3 at Aarey JVLR Station, enabling seamless multimodal integration. Technical evaluations are currently underway to determine whether a mono-cable, bi-cable, or tri-cable detachable gondola system would best suit the region’s terrain, passenger demand, and environmental considerations.
To reduce financial strain on public resources, the project will be implemented through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) under the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model. Private entities will be responsible for investment and operations, while MMRCL will oversee approvals and coordination with the metro system.
Film City, which spans hundreds of acres, sees a significant volume of daily traffic from industry professionals and tourists. With the Western Express Highway frequently gridlocked, the proposed ropeway—traversing hilly terrain—promises a faster, more direct, and less polluting travel alternative.
