WR Expands Parking Infrastructure With 15 New Sites

August 11, 2025: Western Railway (WR) is set to enhance commuter convenience with a major expansion of its parking facilities. The Mumbai Central Division has identified 15 new parking sites over the 2024–2025 and 2025–2026 financial years, spanning over 12,000 square meters. A majority of these sites are already operational, while the remaining are expected to open soon, according to railway officials.

The move addresses the growing demand for parking at stations, particularly in distant suburban areas where last-mile connectivity remains a challenge. Currently, WR operates 22 parking facilities across 25,837 square meters, generating around Rs 7.52 crore annually, highlighting the role of parking in boosting non-fare revenue.

In a step towards green mobility, WR has introduced eight two-wheeler parking and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at key suburban hubs. “In a push towards sustainable mobility, WR has also established eight two-wheeler parking-cum-electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at key suburban nodes, including three at Dadar and one each at Prabhadevi, Mumbai Central, Bandra, Vile Parle, and Andheri. These eco-friendly facilities, covering 2,876 square meters, contribute an additional Rs 72.88 lakh annually to the division’s coffers,” said an official.

Among the top revenue generators is the dedicated parking and vehicle stacking facility at Bandra Terminus, earning Rs 1.52 crore annually. In the 2024–2025 fiscal year, nine new parking sites were commissioned between Churchgate and Virar. Building on this momentum, six additional sites are planned for 2025–2026, with two already operational and four scheduled to open in the coming months.

Railway authorities expect the expanded infrastructure to not only enhance passenger amenities but also boost non-fare earnings. “This initiative is part of a comprehensive plan to enhance passenger amenities while tapping into sustainable and commercially viable solutions,” stated a senior WR official.
