August 12, 2025: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to commence repairs and rehabilitation work on the Parel TT flyover after the monsoon season, expected in October. The flyover, a vital link between Mumbai’s island city and the eastern suburbs, requires urgent structural maintenance.
According to BMC officials, the surface of the carriageway has deteriorated significantly, while the elastomeric bridge bearings have flattened and become ineffective. This has restricted the movement of the expansion joints, leading to further structural concerns.
Cracks have been detected in the diaphragm and pedestals, attributed to the malfunctioning bearings. Minor cracks were also observed in the girders, alongside the growth of vegetation in certain sections. Officials noted that the presence of mastic patches and the large number of closely spaced expansion joints—currently 22 in total—have contributed to traffic congestion during peak hours.
To address these issues, the BMC will undertake structural repairs and replace the bearings, reducing the number of expansion joints from 22 to 10. Furthermore, the existing asphalt surface will be replaced with concrete to ensure deck continuity and improve riding quality.
The rehabilitation work will be carried out with minimal disruption to traffic, as only one lane will be closed at a time. Necessary permissions from traffic police will be obtained to manage the flow effectively. The entire concreting process is expected to take approximately three and a half months.
A BMC official confirmed, “The lanes will be reopened sequentially following the completion of concreting work.” This repair initiative aims to extend the flyover’s lifespan and ease congestion, enhancing connectivity between the island city and eastern suburbs.
