August 13, 2025:
The new Belasis Bridge in Mumbai is on track to open to the public by 31 December 2025, four months ahead of its original April 2026 deadline. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that the reconstruction, undertaken jointly with Western Railway, is now in its final stages. Once inaugurated, the bridge is expected to ease traffic congestion and greatly enhance connectivity between Nagpada and Tardeo, areas previously linked by the old structure.
The original Belasis Bridge, a 130-year-old British-era landmark, was deemed unsafe following a structural audit in 2018 and was demolished in June 2024. Its replacement is a modern, cable-stayed steel bridge featuring six vehicular lanes, doubling the capacity of the former three-lane span. Designed to meet Mumbai’s growing traffic demands, it will strengthen east–west connectivity across the city.
The project is a collaborative effort between Western Railway, which is responsible for works within its jurisdiction, and the BMC, which is constructing the approach roads. The Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) are also partners in the initiative. The total project cost stands at Rs 110 crore, with the BMC contributing Rs 70 crore and Western Railway Rs 40 crore.
Recent weeks have seen significant progress. Western Railway completed the installation of 12 main girders by 10 August, while the BMC has finalised soil testing, foundation work, pier construction, and the removal of obstructing structures.
The accelerated timeline, advanced by six months, follows directives from Additional Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar, who has prioritised faster delivery. The bridge is expected to provide vital relief to commuters in south Mumbai and represents a key milestone in the city’s broader infrastructure modernisation programme.
