August 15, 2025: Mumbai’s development narrative gained a fresh chapter on Wednesday, as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis virtually inaugurated a 5.25-kilometre-long promenade and four pedestrian underpasses along the Dharamveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Mumbai Coastal Road (South). These additions are designed to provide Mumbaikars with a safe, scenic, and accessible recreational space by the sea.
The promenade offers wide walkways, lush landscaped areas, a dedicated cycling track, seating zones, and wheelchair-friendly amenities. Special ramps in the underpasses ensure easy access for people with disabilities and cyclists. The greenery features flowering plants, ornamental trees, and species adapted to the coastal environment, creating a refreshing urban escape.
From midnight on August 15, 2025, the entire southern stretch of the Coastal Road will be open to traffic 24 hours a day. The promenade and underpasses will open to the public the same day at 4:30 pm. Urging motorists to drive responsibly, Mr Fadnavis said: “Do not exceed the prescribed speed limit. CCTV cameras are installed throughout to ensure safety. Let us protect our lives and those of others.”
Highlighting Mumbai’s transformation, he added that the project is not only about faster travel but also about creating spaces for leisure and fitness. “Like Marine Drive, Worli now has a beautiful promenade that residents must make the most of,” he said. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde praised the city’s ongoing metamorphosis, noting that Mumbai’s road network is expanding with durable concrete roads, beautification schemes, and sewage treatment plants. He revealed plans to develop parks across 70 hectares on both sides of the Coastal Road, aiming to give the city an international-standard urban appeal.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar described Mumbai as the nation’s “economic engine” and said that infrastructure upgrades are reshaping its identity. He stressed the importance of high-quality execution in all development works undertaken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
With this project, the Coastal Road evolves beyond being a quicker commute—it becomes a place where Mumbaikars can cycle, walk, or simply sit and take in the sea view. It is about balancing the city’s relentless pace with moments of pause, reflection, and connection with the coastline.
