Persistent Monsoon Showers Cause Waterlogging Across Mumbai; Airlines Advise Extra Travel Time As Heavy Rain Hits Mumbai

August 18, 2025: Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall on Monday, causing significant slowdowns on the Western Express Highway near Vile Parle and waterlogging across several parts of the city. The wet spell, which began over the weekend, continued through Sunday, with multiple locations recording triple-digit rainfall within 24 hours.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) maintained an orange alert for Mumbai and Thane until August 19, warning of heavy to very heavy showers at isolated locations. A yellow alert was issued for August 20, indicating heavy rain in some areas. Observatories in Santacruz and Colaba recorded 85 mm and 55 mm respectively, while automatic weather station data highlighted considerable variation across neighbourhoods.

South Mumbai witnessed 134 mm in Fort, 145 mm in Cotton Green, 121 mm in Grant Road, and 129 mm in Lower Parel. Eastern suburbs such as Parel, Vikhroli, and Bhandup reported between 134 mm and 135 mm, with Ghatkopar and Tagore Nagar recording 124 mm.

Western suburbs bore the brunt, with Dahisar topping the charts at 188 mm, Kandivli at 150 mm, and Borivli 92 mm. The cumulative rainfall this season has exceeded 1,000 mm at both IMD Colaba and Santacruz observatories. Airlines have issued advisories, urging passengers to allow extra travel time to the airport due to slow-moving traffic and waterlogged roads. Akasa Air and Indigo both recommended passengers monitor flight updates and depart early to avoid delays, citing congestion caused by persistent showers.

The IMD also issued a red alert for Mumbai until 11:50 am on Monday, reflecting the intensity of the monsoon rains. Authorities continue to monitor conditions, while commuters are advised to exercise caution on flooded and slippery roads.
