August 19, 2025: Reaching Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s (CSMIA) Terminal 2 has become more convenient following the inauguration of a direct foot overbridge linking the terminal with Mumbai Metro’s Line 3. The bridge, which opened on Saturday, is expected to significantly improve last-mile connectivity for air passengers.
The newly built steel structure connects the CSMIA Metro Station to Terminal 2. Measuring 88 metres in length, 4.3 metres in width, and 3 metres in height, it reduces the walking distance for travellers from 450 metres to just 118 metres. Importantly, passengers will no longer need to cross busy roads while carrying heavy luggage.
Constructed 23 metres above the under-construction Metro Line 7A, the project required precise engineering and stringent safety measures, according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). Officials confirmed that the work was completed without disrupting other infrastructure projects in the vicinity.
“The bridge provides direct, seamless connectivity between Metro Line 3 and the airport. The reduced walking distance will certainly enhance the travel experience for passengers,” an MMRDA official told The Indian Express. The official added that the project presented unique engineering challenges as it had to be built at a considerable height above active metro works, requiring meticulous planning to ensure accuracy and safety.
Efforts to strengthen pedestrian connectivity have been under discussion for months. In July, senior officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), MMRDA, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited, and Indian Railways met at the civic headquarters to explore ways of integrating pedestrian infrastructure with the expanding underground metro network.
Among upcoming projects is a one-kilometre pedestrian subway linking Acharya Atre Chowk Metro Station with the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and the Coastal Road’s parking facility at Haji Ali, along with a 160-metre arm connecting nearby open spaces.
