Worli BDD Chawl Allottees Get Homes But Face Several Other Difficulties

August 22, 2025: The long-awaited handover of redeveloped flats in the BDD Chawls at Worli was meant to mark a celebratory milestone. Instead, for many families, it has brought a fresh set of worries, with homes delivered lacking some facilities.

As part of the first phase, MHADA has distributed keys to beneficiaries, but only after requiring them to sign an undertaking to vacate their transit accommodation within 15 days. Residents say the timeline is unrealistic given the absence of utilities and permissions. “Officials told us to collect keys only if we were ready to move in within 15 days. But how is that practical?” asked Bajrang Shankar Kale, who has been allotted a flat on the 36th floor. Kale added that his son, a student of artificial intelligence and data science, urgently needs Wi-Fi access, which service providers have not yet been allowed to install.

The looming Ganesh Chaturthi festival has compounded anxieties. “It is impossible to find electricians or labourers during the celebrations. Even fitting fans and lights is a challenge,” said Nishigandha Bavdekar, among the first beneficiaries.

Residents also complain of soaring shifting costs. “Local workers are charging Rs 3,500 just to move one cupboard. Earlier, Rs 5,000 would cover an entire household’s furniture,” said Asmita Shetye. Others point to incomplete paperwork. Kale noted that ownership letters issued by MHADA omit family members’ names, creating difficulties in updating official documents and even confusing delivery services.

MHADA, however, has defended its stance. A deputy chief engineer said the urgency stems from the need to vacate transit camps for subsequent phases. “The flats are ready and large enough for residents to move in and continue interior work. One vendor has already been given permission for cable installation,” he stated.

For residents, though, the promise of new homes remains overshadowed by practical struggles.
