August 23, 2025: Once envisioned as Navi Mumbai’s next vibrant hub, Dronagiri township is now confronting a severe civic challenge. A key stretch of the scenic road leading to Atal Setu and the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) has become an open dumping ground, with heaps of rotting waste scattered beneath the shadow of plush high-rises.
On Thursday afternoon, a correspondent observed the road towards Sector 51 and JNPT strewn with decomposing garbage, creating a stark contrast against the backdrop of modern residential towers. The irony of the situation was underscored by a CIDCO-installed sign warning residents against dumping waste, with the threat of action — a clear indication that such dumping has become routine.
Local scrap collector Faida Hussain said, “Every day, either I or my son Javed come here to collect scrap like glass, plastic and other valuables from the garbage on Bhendkhal Road. We sell these to dealers.” Hussain claimed most of the waste comes from nearby buildings and villages, while the remainder is supposed to be collected by a private agency.
Dr Digambar Aher, a family physician and surgeon running a speciality clinic in the area, added, “Garbage dumping here is a common practice. Apart from being an eyesore, it poses a serious health hazard.”
When contacted, CIDCO PRO Priya Ratambe stated that officers had been alerted following video and photo evidence shared with the media, and assured that swift action would be taken to find a permanent solution.
Local MLA Mahesh Baldi also confirmed that, now that the issue has been highlighted, necessary measures would be implemented to prevent further dumping and restore hygiene along the road.
Residents and authorities hope that timely intervention will reclaim the scenic road from the growing mounds of waste, preserving the township’s original promise of a clean and vibrant community.
