Bombay HC Clears Metro Line 6 Carshed Construction At Kanjur Village

August 26, 2025: The Bombay High Court on Monday granted approval for the construction of a carshed at Kanjur village for Metro Line 6, observing that the project serves a vital public interest by enhancing transport facilities for citizens.

A division bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne noted that the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) must give an undertaking to comply with all stipulated conditions. The court observed that permissions had already been secured from the Maharashtra Coastal Zonal Management Authority (MCZMA) and the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA), both of which required that the High Court find the project “necessary and expedient” for public interest.

The MMRDA had approached the court seeking directions to the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change to facilitate the commencement of work for the construction of Metro piers at Kanjur village. Through its advocate Akshay Shinde, the authority submitted that 34 non-mangrove trees would be impacted and some forest land diverted, but assured that compensatory afforestation would be carried out. For this, 0.10 hectares of land at Manori have been earmarked.

It was further submitted that the proposed carshed, spread over 15.02 hectares at Kanjurmarg, includes one hectare falling under Coastal Zone Regulation (CRZ)-II. The MMRDA emphasized that the use of mangrove forest land was “unavoidable” and restricted to the “bare minimum requirement.”

The court recorded that expert bodies had carefully examined the matter before granting permissions. Metro Line 6, a crucial east-west connector, will link Swami Samarth Nagar in Andheri with Vikhroli, aiming to ease commuting and reduce congestion across Mumbai.
