August 26, 2025: Private vehicles continue to dominate Mumbai’s roads, with two-wheelers and cars comprising almost 88% of the city’s vehicle fleet, while public buses make up less than 1%, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Environment Status Report 2024–25.

The report, released earlier this week, revealed that Mumbai’s vehicle population crossed the 50-lakh mark in 2024–25, reaching 50,54,907 by March 2025. This marks a steady increase from 45,37,211 in 2023 and 47,59,976 in 2024. Of the total, two-wheelers (59.34%) and cars, jeeps, and station wagons (28.72%) form the bulk of vehicles on city roads. Other categories include autorickshaws (5.02%), taxis (3.27%), goods vehicles (0.42%), tractors and trailers (0.02%), and others (2.72%).

Between April 2024 and March 2025, around 2.94 lakh new vehicles were registered in Mumbai, reflecting a 6.2% rise. Of these, two-wheelers comprised 60.87%, followed by cars, jeeps, and station wagons at 23.94%. Registrations of taxis and cabs stood at 6.26%, autorickshaws at 3.06%, and goods vehicles at 4.43%. Buses accounted for a mere 0.73%.

In terms of fuel use, petrol remains dominant, powering 39.83 lakh vehicles (78.79%), followed by 5.63 lakh on diesel and 4.36 lakh on CNG. Mumbai currently has 48,854 registered electric vehicles, alongside 11,418 running on LPG and 10,832 on other fuels.

The report further noted that the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking operated 2,731 buses as of March 2025, with 91% of the fleet already environment-friendly CNG and electric buses. By 2027, BEST plans to fully transition to electric buses, which the civic body estimates will cut 3,18,296 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
