August 29, 2025: India’s first bullet train is set to begin operations on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor in 2027, with the Ministry of Railways releasing fresh images of a station currently under construction in Gujarat.
Once completed, the service will be the fastest train in the country, travelling the 508-kilometre stretch between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in just two hours and seven minutes at a speed of 308 kmph. The corridor will originate at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai and conclude at Sabarmati in Ahmedabad, with stops at ten cities along the route, including Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara and Anand.
On Thursday, 28 August, the Ministry posted pictures highlighting the scale of the project. “With modern design, cultural identity, seamless connectivity and eco-friendly features, the stations will redefine passenger comfort and set new benchmarks in travel,” the ministry said in its statement.
India’s Ambassador to Japan, Sibi George, reaffirmed the project’s timeline, noting the crucial role of Japanese expertise and financing. “Japan has been an important partner in infrastructure projects, especially in the railway sector. All I can tell you is we will have a train running on that corridor by 2027. I stand by what I said,” he remarked in an interview with News18.
His comments precede Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Japan, where he will attend the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit and meet his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba for the first time since Ishiba assumed office in October 2024. The high-speed rail project is expected to feature prominently in bilateral discussions, underscoring the deepening strategic and economic partnership between the two nations.
