September 1, 2025: Another chapter of Mumbai’s cinematic heritage is about to close. Famous Studios, the 79-year-old film hub in Mahalaxmi that once rang with lights, cameras and action, is set to be demolished to make way for a gleaming residential skyscraper.
Founded in 1943 by J. B. Roongta, the studio has been woven into Bollywood’s story for nearly eight decades, offering cutting-edge facilities for filming, sound recording and post-production. From landmark feature films to advertising campaigns, the studio hosted countless productions and became an integral part of the city’s creative fabric. Now, the curtains are finally set to fall.
According to industry reports, the landowners are in advanced discussions with K Raheja Corp Real Estate and have finalised plans to redevelop the 70,000 sq ft plot. The project submitted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation outlines a 69-storey residential tower, with homes beginning from the ninth floor. Designed as expansive three- and four-bedroom residences, each apartment will boast sweeping views of the Arabian Sea and Mahalaxmi Racecourse.
While labelled as mixed-use, the commercial aspect of the development will remain minimal. Of the 4.3 lakh sq ft of built-up space, the vast majority is earmarked for luxury housing, underlining Mahalaxmi’s growing identity as a high-end residential district.
The proposal also integrates public transport connectivity. With the upcoming tower located within 500 metres of the Science Museum Metro Station, studies are already underway to explore a potential direct vestibule link.
If the deal is sealed, it would become K Raheja Corp’s third premium residential venture in Mahalaxmi, following Vivarea and Modern Vivarea. Demolition is expected to begin by year’s end, likely before Christmas. Much like Goregaon’s Filmistan Studio, which is also being replaced by luxury towers, Famous Studios will soon survive only in memories and archives, as Mumbai’s skyline reaches ever higher.
