September 3, 2025: Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday said the Maharashtra government is committed to bringing back Marathi-speaking families who were forced to leave Mumbai due to the lack of affordable housing. Replying to a debate under Rule 293 in the assembly, he said the Mahayuti government is working on a massive urban transformation that will bring “historic changes” to the lives of the city’s residents.
The government has framed a new housing policy to construct 35 lakh affordable homes with an investment of ₹70,000 crore, designed to be sustainable and accessible for economically weaker sections. “We are fulfilling the long-pending dream of common citizens to own a home in Mumbai. The city’s makeover is being done in the true sense during the tenure of the Mahayuti government,” Shinde said.
Progress is underway on several key redevelopment initiatives. A total of 556 flats under the Worli BDD chawl project will be distributed by August 15, with 25% of units to be allotted by December, ultimately benefiting 15,600 tenants. Redevelopment has also begun in Motilal Nagar (Goregaon) and GTB Nagar, covering 4,900 residents, while tenders for group housing in Kamathipura’s Abhyudaya Nagar are expected to conclude by September 2025, benefiting 11,000 tenants. Cluster redevelopment projects in Adarsh Nagar (Worli), Bandra Reclamation, and Naigaon are advancing, alongside slum rehabilitation of 6,144 families at Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar.
Shinde highlighted plans to increase housing stock for mill workers, with 13,161 homes already allotted and another one lakh planned across seven sites. The Dharavi redevelopment project, he said, will rehabilitate 72,000 families and act as a model for “employment, education, healthcare, and social harmony.”
He also pointed to initiatives such as the road concretization drive, improved pothole repair systems, and the ₹1,106 crore ‘Aapla Dawakhana’ healthcare scheme.
