September 4, 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has pledged support for a series of major development initiatives in Thane district, including the transformation of the Ulhas riverfront in the Ambernath-Badlapur belt into a new tourist attraction, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The assurance was given during a meeting between MMRDA Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee and local leaders, among them former Kulgaon-Badlapur Municipal Council president Ram Patkar. Officials stated that talks centred on developing the Ulhas riverfront along the lines of Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront project. Proposals also included deepening the riverbed to mitigate flooding risks and examining the long-term feasibility of water transport to improve mobility.
Alongside the riverfront initiative, MMRDA has indicated readiness to facilitate the establishment of logistics parks at Chamtoli, Joveli, Dahivali, Varade, Bendshil, Kasgaon and adjoining areas. These parks are expected to enhance regional connectivity, create employment opportunities, and stimulate wider economic activity across the district.
According to officials, the twin focus on urban rejuvenation and industrial infrastructure reflects MMRDA’s broader strategy to drive balanced growth across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
