Mumbai’s Pothole Woes Persist Despite 13,000 Complaints

September 5, 2025: Despite repeated efforts by the civic authorities, potholes continue to trouble commuters across Mumbai. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has received more than 13,000 complaints regarding cratered roads this monsoon, with Bhandup recording the highest number.

According to civic data, 13,348 complaints have been lodged by residents so far, of which 12,710 have been marked as resolved. Yet, many arterial and residential roads remain plagued by potholes, causing severe inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians alike. Areas such as Ghatkopar, Andheri, Borivali, Kurla, Sion and Dharavi remain among the worst affected, with daily commuting often becoming arduous.

The problem has worsened since the onset of the monsoon, when rainfall typically accelerates road damage. The BMC launched the ‘Pothole QuickFix’ mobile application to enable citizens to report road damage more easily, along with additional grievance channels through WhatsApp and Twitter. While most complaints have come via the app, civic officials admit that new potholes continue to appear despite ongoing repair work.

Bhandup alone accounted for the highest share of complaints, with 2,051 issues reportedly resolved. On average, over 300 complaints have been filed each month. However, citizens remain frustrated, noting that even after the monsoon has ended, many damaged roads have yet to see permanent repairs.

Ahead of Ganeshotsav, the BMC undertook a special pothole-filling drive to prepare for the heavy festival traffic. Nonetheless, the impact has been limited, as traffic congestion remains severe across several parts of the city, particularly in the suburbs where festive pavilions add to the pressure on already deteriorating roads.

Residents argue that while the corporation has repaired thousands of potholes on record, the reality on the ground suggests much more remains to be done to ensure smoother, safer travel.
