Mumbai’s Iconic New Yorker Restaurant To Close After 45 Years On September 11

September 8, 2025: After more than four decades, New Yorker, the much-loved vegetarian Tex-Mex-Italian-Indian restaurant at Chowpatty Seaface, will shut its doors on September 11. Ranbir Batra, son of founder Tony Brar, announced the closure on Instagram, citing “unforeseen circumstances.

A landmark since 1979, New Yorker has been a cherished dining spot for generations of Mumbaikars. Known for its Mexican tomato soup, paneer quesadilla, Blue Tribe Veg Sausage pizza, churros, molten choco lava cake, and Oreo thickshakes, it offered both nostalgia and comfort food.

Though the exact reason for closure remains undisclosed, speculation points to possible building redevelopment. While bidding farewell to its physical space, patrons hope the brand may return through a delivery format or new outlet. For now, Mumbai prepares to part with a restaurant that shaped countless memories along the Chowpatty shoreline.
