September 10, 2025: Mumbai’s historic Elphinstone Road overbridge will be closed to vehicular traffic from today as work begins on replacing the ageing British-era structure with a modern double-decker bridge.
Joint Commissioner of Traffic Anil Kumbhare confirmed that the decision, first notified in April, remains in effect. “The notice remains valid. Now it is up to the MMRDA to take the necessary measures for the rehabilitation of commuters. The closure will begin as scheduled on September 10,” he told Mid-Day.
The redevelopment plan involves demolishing the current road overbridge, which links Prabhadevi and Parel, and constructing a state-of-the-art double-decker bridge integrated with the upcoming Sewri–Worli elevated connector. Officials say the new design will not only improve traffic flow but also help accommodate the growing commuter load in central Mumbai.
The Elphinstone Bridge passes over two of the city’s busiest suburban railway stations—Prabhadevi and Parel—which together handle between five and seven lakh passengers each day. Authorities believe the replacement structure will significantly ease congestion and enhance safety for both road users and rail commuters.
The closure is expected to cause temporary disruption, but officials insist the redevelopment is essential to meet Mumbai’s long-term transport needs.
