September 10, 2025: The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) will on Wednesday begin final inspections of Mumbai Metro Line 2B’s first phase, covering a 5.39-km stretch from Mandale to Diamond Garden in the eastern suburbs. According to officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), this represents the last step before the corridor can be cleared for passenger operations.
Trial runs have already been conducted along the route, which includes five stations: Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk and Diamond Garden. If the inspection report is favourable, services could be launched by the end of September.
CMRS, a statutory authority under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, is tasked with certifying the safety of all Metro rail systems in India. Following the inspection, a compliance checklist will be shared with MMRDA. Any corrective measures required must be addressed before a final inspection clears the line for public use. This marks the second CMRS review of the corridor, with a preliminary inspection conducted earlier this year.
The Mandale–Diamond Garden section is part of the 23.6-km elevated Yellow Line 2B, which will ultimately connect Mandale in the east to D N Nagar in Andheri via 20 stations. Once fully operational, the line is expected to serve over 10 lakh commuters daily and ease congestion on busy road corridors.
Work on the second phase, stretching from Diamond Garden to D N Nagar, is approximately 88% complete. Officials noted that once civil work is finished, station interiors, electrical systems and signalling will be installed, with commercial operations targeted for early 2026. The depot for the line has already been completed.
For MMRDA, the inspection is a crucial milestone towards bringing yet another Metro corridor into service as Mumbai races to expand its urban transport network.
