BMC Plans Double-Decker Bridge, Veer Savarkar Flyover Faces Axe In Goregaon

September 11, 2025:

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has granted in-principle approval to demolish the Veer Savarkar (MTNL) Flyover in Goregaon — a key east-west connector constructed just seven years ago as part of the proposed double-decker bridge under the Versova–Dahisar Link Road (VDLR) project. The final clearance for demolition, however, remains with Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.

The Veer Savarkar Flyover, also known as the MTNL Flyover, links the Western Express Highway (WEH) near the Radisson Hotel to Rustomjee Ozone in Goregaon West. Built in 2018 at a cost of Rs 27 crore after more than a decade of planning, it had significantly reduced travel time between WEH, Goregaon, and Malad from over 45 minutes to under ten. The BMC now proposes its removal to facilitate Phase 2 of the Mumbai Coastal Road, which will connect Versova to Dahisar and link Mindspace–Malad with Dindoshi.

A senior civic official explained: “We explored several alternatives to retain the existing flyover, but modifying it would have been nearly as costly as constructing a new double-decker bridge. The new structure will support local traffic and serve as a crucial link between Malad and Dindoshi.” The demolition is not expected immediately after the monsoon, suggesting that the project timeline remains flexible.

The proposal has triggered strong opposition from local residents and political parties, who argue that the flyover is a vital transport link. Public concerns centre on a potential traffic crisis in the area if

the structure is dismantled. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has also threatened agitation, describing the decision as short-sighted and reckless.

The BMC maintains that the redevelopment is essential for long-term urban connectivity and that the new double-decker bridge will enhance traffic flow in the rapidly developing western suburbs.
