Final Safety Audit Underway For Mumbai Metro Line 2B Phase-I

September 11, 2025: The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) has begun the final inspection of Mumbai Metro Line 2B Phase-I, a 5.39-km stretch between Mandale and Diamond Garden in the eastern suburbs. The inspection, which started on September 10, will determine whether this section is ready to open for passenger services.

The initial phase includes five stations—Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk, and Diamond Garden. Trial runs were completed earlier this year. If CMRS gives its approval following the safety audit, passenger operations could begin by the end of 2025.

In July, CMRS officials had conducted a detailed review of the corridor’s infrastructure, including signalling, power systems, tracks, platforms, and emergency protocols. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) was issued a list of rectifications to be made. According to officials, all identified issues have now been resolved, ensuring the section is prepared for the final safety clearance.

Metro Line 2B, part of the city’s Yellow Line, will eventually stretch 23.6 km from Mandale to D N Nagar in Andheri, with a total of 20 stations. Work on the Diamond Garden to D N Nagar segment is nearly 88 per cent complete. Authorities anticipate the entire line will be fully operational by early 2027, though services on the Mandale–Diamond Garden section are expected to begin first.

Once commissioned, Line 2B is projected to significantly ease congestion on major arterial roads in the eastern suburbs and cater to an estimated 10 lakh commuters daily. The phased approach allows completed sections to be opened for public use while construction progresses on the remaining stretches.
