September 13, 202: A video circulating on social media has drawn attention to the complete darkness and deteriorating road conditions on the Lalbaug Flyover, one of Mumbai’s busiest routes. The clip, shared by user @PrathameshK98 on X (formerly Twitter), shows the flyover at night without any functioning street lights, making driving risky for thousands of commuters.
Along with the absence of lighting, the user highlighted that the road surface is in poor shape, forcing riders to depend on high-beam headlights to navigate. “Street Lights Off,” the post read, reflecting the growing frustration of those who use the flyover daily. With limited visibility, uneven patches, and potholes, motorists are left vulnerable, particularly at night.
The timing of the issue has amplified concerns. Just days earlier, the Lalbaug area, including the flyover, was brightly lit and decorated for Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Now, the stark contrast of complete darkness underscores civic neglect once the festivities ended. Commuters say this negligence compromises safety and stresses the importance of ensuring well-lit and well-maintained roads year-round.
The video also highlights the potential risk of accidents as vehicles struggle to move through scattered patches on the flyover. Drivers and riders navigating this stretch are left to “guess the road,” which increases the possibility of mishaps.
Known as one of Mumbai’s most historic neighborhoods, Lalbaug is home to the iconic Lalbaugcha Raja mandal, which attracts millions of devotees annually. The Lalbaug Flyover is a critical link for managing heavy traffic in this bustling area. Despite its significance, non-functional street lights and poor road upkeep have become pressing issues, prompting calls for immediate civic intervention.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has acknowledged the concerns and is expected to take corrective measures to restore lighting and improve the road’s condition.
