Versova–Bandra Sea Link To Transform Mumbai’s Western Connectivity By 2027

September 15, 2025: The Versova–Bandra Sea Link (VBSL), officially named the Swatantrya Veer Savarkar Sea Link, is one of Mumbai’s most ambitious transport infrastructure projects. Designed as an eight-lane, controlled-access motorway over the Arabian Sea, the 17.17-km link will connect Versova in the northwest to the Bandra–Worli Sea Link in the south, with interchanges at Juhu and Carter Road. Once operational, it will offer a faster, signal-free commute across the city’s western suburbs while easing congestion on the Western Express Highway.

As of September 2025, nearly 60% of construction has been completed. The project cost, initially pegged at ₹11,332 crore, has risen to approximately ₹18,121 crore due to higher material prices, design changes, and construction delays. The Maharashtra government has set 2027 as the target for completion.

The sea link is expected to reduce north–south travel time, decongest arterial routes, and provide smoother access to key neighbourhoods. Plans include extending the corridor further north towards Dahisar and Bhayandar, creating a larger western coastal transport network.

Authorities have also addressed environmental and social concerns. Local fishermen raised issues over the impact of connectors, leading to design modifications approved by the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA). Measures such as extended viaducts aim to reduce disruption to marine habitats and local livelihoods.

Beyond easing commutes, the project is expected to have a significant impact on real estate. Improved connectivity is likely to boost demand in Versova, Juhu, Carter Road, and Bandra, benefiting both residential and commercial segments. Property values along the corridor are expected to appreciate once the link becomes operational.

Despite challenges linked to monsoons, rising costs, and regulatory clearances, the Versova–Bandra Sea Link is set to become a key addition to Mumbai’s transport backbone, offering faster travel and supporting urban growth across the western suburbs.
