Sassoon Dock Set For Tech-Driven Revamp With Finnish Collaboration

September 20, 2025: Mumbai’s historic Sassoon Dock is set for a major modernisation in collaboration with Finland, state minister Nitesh Rane announced on Wednesday. The initiative will deploy advanced technology to revamp one of the city’s oldest and busiest fishing harbours.

Rane met with a Finnish delegation, including officials and representatives of Finnish companies, at the dock to discuss the upgrade strategy, according to an official statement. Built in the 19th century, Sassoon Dock today handles operations far beyond its original capacity, resulting in concerns over hygiene, odour, fish handling, and safety standards.

The proposed revamp will introduce modular infrastructure to address these challenges, aiming to make the harbour more efficient, sustainable, and globally competitive. “The modernisation will help transform Sassoon Dock into a world-class, clean, efficient, and sustainable harbour,” Rane said.

The discussions also explored opportunities for technology transfer through international cooperation. Finnish companies shared solutions ranging from advanced fishing methods to digital tools and eco-friendly innovations that could streamline operations and improve fish handling practices.

The state government believes the upgrade will not only improve infrastructure but also enhance the livelihoods of local fishermen by boosting productivity and earnings while ensuring environmentally responsible practices.
