MMRDA Imposes Rs 1 Crore Fine, Orders Immediate Repairs On Atal Setu

September 23, 2025: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has imposed a Rs 1 crore penalty on Daewoo-Tata Infrastructure Projects and directed urgent resurfacing of a damaged section on the 22-kilometre Atal Setu, following a comprehensive inspection led by Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS. Additional Metropolitan Commissioner and Project In-Charge Shri Vikram Kumar, IAS, oversaw the review.

Officials reported that minor surface distress was identified along a two-kilometre stretch between km 14 and km 16 on the Navi Mumbai-bound carriageway. The deterioration was attributed to heavy monsoon rainfall and constant traffic load. The contractor has been instructed to complete the repairs within five days. “If the contractor fails to comply within this period, additional action would be pursued against them,” MMRDA officials said.

Beyond the immediate repair orders, the contractor’s defect liability period, originally ending in January 2026, has been extended by one year. MMRDA also confirmed that once the monsoon season ends, the affected section will be permanently reconstructed at the contractor’s expense using Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM) and Asphalt Concrete (AC).

Reassuring commuters, the MMRDA team emphasised, “Atal Setu continues to remain structurally strong and safe,” while affirming its commitment to rigorous monitoring and swift remedial measures to maintain the reliability of this vital infrastructure.

By combining prompt repair directives with financial and contractual penalties, MMRDA reinforced its dedication to upholding quality standards. Permanent reconstruction after the monsoon, along with ongoing stringent oversight, aims to ensure the long-term durability and safety of Atal Setu for all users.
