Cabinet Approves Redevelopment Of SVP Nagar Colony In Andheri

September 24, 2025: The Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday approved a comprehensive redevelopment project for 4,973 flats across 498 plots in Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Nagar, Andheri (West), to be implemented through Mhada. The land, originally allotted in 1993 under a World Bank project, houses 98 cooperative housing societies, including 24 high-income group plots, 62 plots of 60 sq m, and 245 plots of 100 sq m.

Officials stated that the redevelopment will follow the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Development Control Rules (DCR), aiming to provide modern, spacious housing along with integrated community facilities. The project will incorporate green areas, schools, health centres, and commercial spaces in a township-style layout. Amenities will include playgrounds, gymnasiums, swimming pools, auditoriums, and institutional offices, while essential services such as water supply, sewage, and electricity will be upgraded to contemporary standards. Green building features, including solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and waste management systems, will also be included.

Mhada plans to model the project on successful redevelopments in Bandra Reclamation and Adarsh Nagar, Worli. A high-level committee, chaired by the housing department secretary, will be set up to expedite the process.

SVP Nagar, originally intended for low- and middle-income groups, has over time accommodated film production houses and a well-known acting school. Of the 98 cooperative societies, seven have completed redevelopment and three are under construction, with six having signed development agreements. The current plan will cover the remaining 82 societies, home to approximately 2,666 families.

Mhada officials highlighted that several buildings and chawls in the colony are in dilapidated condition. Redevelopment will not only improve living standards but also provide residents with larger, modern homes and enhanced community amenities. The initiative forms part of the state’s ongoing efforts to modernise old Mhada colonies while offering residents improved quality of life.
